What is the best way to start our Escape Games when several teams are playing at the same time?

City Escape Game Stockholm

One of the most common questions we get from companies, schools, and larger groups that are going to play several teams at the same time is:
"How do we start – won't it be chaotic if all the teams start at the same time?"

Short answer: no 😊
A longer answer—and our best tips—are coming up.

First and foremost – an important thing to keep in mind

The time does not start just because you log into the game and read through the rules.
Each team's unique playing time only starts after the team has registered its team name. This means that teams can read the instructions at their leisure and start when they are ready.

That said, there are two proven ways to think about the start:

1. All teams start when they are ready.

The most common – and often most appreciated – arrangement is:

  • All teams log in at the same time

  • Reading through the rules of the game

  • Register their team name when they feel ready to start

All teams follow the same route, which sometimes raises questions about whether it might feel confusing or "unfair." Our experience is actually the opposite. Seeing other teams along the way creates a clear sense of competition that enhances the experience and engagement.

In addition:

  • The tasks must be solved correctly in order to progress, which creates a natural spread between the teams.

  • The content is broad, so a team that is ahead in one task can quickly fall behind in the next.

The missions are so captivating that the team is often completely absorbed in its own bubble – even if other teams happen to be nearby. Navigating between stations is a fun part of the game, but it's far from everything.

2. Start with the teams' slot times

For groups that have the opportunity, desire, and willingness to further structure the start, it is perfectly fine to work with slot times per team.

Here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Teams must register their team name only when it is time to start. This ensures that the time does not start in advance.

It is only upon registered start that:

  • The game board with the map becomes visible

A convenient option for groups that want extra control over the flow – but entirely voluntary.

A question we often get asked – and are happy to inspire

This is something we get asked about almost daily, and we hope these tips will inspire you to find the setup that works best for your group. Whether you start side by side or in slots, the goal is the same: an engaging, fun, and memorable experience together.
